So one thing I’ve noticed about myself is I tend to recognize voices very well. Mainly voice actors and advice acting, I’d say, but still I tend to hear a familiar voice and then I can deduce pretty well whom it may be. But The Masked Singer has shown me that I am 1) probably not as good at it as I thought, and 2) way behind on my pop culture.

The Jeopardy! Of Mystery Singing Shows

Over this past weekend, my sister showed me The Masked Singer for the first time. This reality singing competition show debuted in 2019 and features a line-up of pop culture icons who are dressed up in elaborate costumes and take on false identities. They sing songs in front of a panel of judges, and it’s their job to guess who the celebrity/singer/musical artist is over the course of several episodes based on their voice and several other clues. It’s a very low-stakes, chill T.V. show that reminds me of  Jeopardy! or Wheel of Fortune — you throw out your guesses as best you can and get really excited when you get it right.

I Don’t Recognize Half These People

The Masked Singer is a really good combination of viewer participation and singing; the singing is lovely and it’s fun to talk about your guesses for who the namesake participants are. However, after watching two episodes I have come to one conclusion: I need to know more famous people. I did recognize maybe one or two of the icons who were unmasked, but the others — I knew they were famous, obviously, but I had no idea who they were. But that’s more on me than it is on the show.

Check Out The Masked Singer on Hulu

If you’re looking for a show you can casually watch, don’t necessarily have to watch in order, and encourages a fun amount of audience participation, I’d check out The Masked Singer. Even if you don’t know who the people underneath the alter egos are, it’s still fun to guess and then watch them take off the mask and be like “Oh! I have no idea who you are!”
