I have a pretty extensive TBR list; to the point where I have actively put a hold on adding more books to it until I can actually get through some of those books and keep it under control. Factoring in my 2025 Reading Goal list and the recent recommendations, there are about 25 or so titles I want to check out. That’s a lot, given how slow I can work through a book, but I think I’ve found something that will help!

Introducing The TBR Jar

Have you ever seen something online and then realized, “Wait, that’s actually a really good idea?” That’s what happened to me with the TBR jar. This is a thing where people who read/share/review books on YouTube and TikTok write down a bunch of prompts on slips of paper, put them in a jar/mug, and then draw a few at random to let that decide the next thing they read.

I don’t know why but I was inspired one day to do my own version of this. I was at first torn between a Bingo Card or TBR jar, but ultimately decided this one would work better for what I’m looking for. In an effort to be more whimsical and make picking my next reads easier, I have written down all my TBR List titles on little slips of paper, folded them up all nice, and dumped them all in a mug. Looking around online a lot of people have beautifully-decorated, colorful jars to draw out of but I’m just sticking with a DIY painted mug I made the other week. I still get creativity points for that!

Letting A Mug Decide My Reading Order

I often find that once I finish a book, I have a hard time deciding which one to read next. With my Book Club the next book is already decided for me, but as far as personal reads — I have a hard time choosing which out of the 25 I have I’m going to tackle next. It’s like analysis paralysis. But to get in on the BookTube/BookTok trend and have a fun little side project, I’m going to let a random draw dictate what I read next. I have already cheated slightly, as I just finished My Favorite Kidnapper by Melanie Moreland and had to immediately buy the second book in the “My Favorite” series, My Favorite Boss. But after this one, I’m going to see what’s in store!
