Good evening everyone! How are you?
So. . .I’m aware this post is coming very late — I meant to do this earlier but, you know, things happen.
Therefore, in order to wrap up the last ten days or so in the most efficient way possible, I’m going to try to condense it all as best I can!
Part I: The Late Meteorologist
Alright, so something that has never happened before in my producing/anchoring career happened last Thursday (1/16).
But first — background information:
So go into work at about 1 a.m. and our meteorologist comes in at 4 a.m. The show must be done by 5 a.m. for the directors, the entire show runs from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Now the story —
So I go into work like normal, right? I’m doing my usual thing, I’m drinking my coffee, I’m listening to my YouTube, I’m putting the show together, and it gets to be 4 a.m. Now, the meteorologist isn’t there yet but I figure he’s a little late, because sometimes he comes in closer to 4:20 or so. Buuuuut it gets to be 4:30 a.m. and he’s not there. I call him a total of between three and five times and no answer, goes straight to voice mail. At this point, I figure he’s overslept and I can’t wake him up. So I talk to my directors and I tell ’em he’s late, then at about 5 a.m. I call my boss.
So I tell her the meteorologist is late and that I can’t wake him up, so what do I do? She freaks out because he hasn’t been late to work in about four years. So we manage to wake up a coworker of ours t0 go to meteorologist’s apartment to wake him up (I couldn’t go because I don’t know where he lives and I had to finish the show). Now at this point I’m considering just delaying the show’s weather until meteorologist gets there.
Long story short we manage to wake up, he races over to the studio, we do the show like normal and we all have a good laugh about it. Basically meteorologist’s phone died and he forgot to plug it in so his alarm went kaput. Shortly after that I bought an emergency alarm clock in case the six alarms at 11:45 p.m., 11:50 p.m., 11:55 p.m., 11:56 p.m., 12:00 a.m. and 12:05 a.m. don’t go off. I always wake up on the first alarm but hey, better to be safe. If meteorologist oversleeps, that’s bad, but if I oversleep, that’s much, much worse.
So yeah — first time that happened! Little stressful but hey I had a good laugh about it.
Part II: The Missing Accident
So this is another spot-news story. So last Wednesday (1/15) I barely get the chance to take off my microphone after the show is over before I have to go outside in the freezing cold morning to find a car accident.
But here’s the thing — the accident comes over the police scanner while I’m doing the last news block of the show, so nobody gets a clear address for where it is. So I’m literally in my work dress, in my coat, scrambling to get the camera things together, I get in the car, and you know what I did? I drove up and down the same strip of road for at least a half hour looking for any sign of an accident.
Supposedly a car hit another car and then ran into a house — so I’m looking for a 1) car that’s running and 2) a car that’s in the front yard. I drive up and down the same strip of road. For. Thirty. Minutes. Thirty Minutes. Needless to say I was not very amused.
Also, funny story: the accident was nowhere near the street where I was driving. And by the time I got to the correct scene, accident was gone. Totally cleared out, hardly any evidence an accident was there. Ended up shooting B-roll footage of the scene but yeah — kinda of an annoying way to start the morning. But hey, at least now I bring emergency tennis shoes in case of spot news.
Part III: The Visit
Some members of my family came to visit me last Sunday (1/19). Now to be fair I was their second choice — they had plans by snowy/closed roads ruined their plans. So they came to Nebraska instead!
It was great, we checked out Penny’s Diner in town (which is like a old diner from Grease with burgers, malts, etc.); Fort Cody’s Trading Post; the Golden Spike Tower which overlooks Bailey Yard; my very first wine tasting at Feather River Vineyards (where I got a yummy white wine, “Ambiance” with pineapple and citrus); and cocktail hour/dinner at Pals Brewing Company (I tried a yummy raspberry beer and had lovely conversation over pizza). Great to be able to spend with them!
Part IV: Cooking
As pictured below:
~ Pan-Seared Steak with butter, thyme, rosemary and garlic paired with garlic and Parmesan-roasted Potatoes
~ Salt’n Pepper Shrimp over rice
~ One-Pot Basil Pasta, including basil, tomatoes, garlic, crushed red pepper, topped with Parmesan
~ Pizza Pockets
Part V: Other Updates
I got a coat and mug with company’s logo on it! Yey!
Heads Up:
This coming weekend I shall have another family visit! And in a week, I go back to Colorado to visit Weekend Friend!
