I’m way late to the party on this one, but better late than never, right? Hulu’s The Dropout is a 2022 biographical TV drama mini-series depicting and retelling the story of Elizabeth Holmes and her fraudulent healthcare-biomedical company, Theranos. Apparently based on an ABC News podcast of the same name that debuted in 2019 and concluded in 2022, this is a story I’m familiar with and have read about and listened to mini-docs about. But having an intrigue for stories of frauds and drama, and quite enjoying the brilliant casting of Amanda Seyfried as the titular dropout, I had to give this a watch the second I got access.

An Appropriate Bingeworthy Mini-Series

I love me some true crime and related media, if my reading choices don’t already convey that, and this does fit into that category a little bit. Much like how Netflix’s Inventing Anna (2022) gave more people insight into Anna Delvey/Sorokin, this story is so cool to watch; there’s something about watching a person dig themselves into a hole of lies so deep they can’t possibly get out of it. It’s this sort of guilt pleasure feeling — like oooooooh! Financial crimes aren’t really as glamorous as traditional murder crimes, but it’s still so fascinating to see people like Holmes defraud so many people. This fictionalized telling of the story does make you feel for Holmes, and makes you feel like she had a great idea but couldn’t make it happen on the right timeline; then again, maybe she just doesn’t understand the harm she caused. Either way, seeing it all be brought down by red bureaucratic tape is hilarious and so satisfying, and I love the Spotlight vibes from the WSJ; it makes my inner journalist happy.

Highly Recommend For A Weekend Watch

If only to see the downfall of horrible people and to watch the greatest audiobook narrator of all time Stephen Fry, you should totally watch The Dropout. It’s awesome to see this story come to life and be played out in such a dramatic, well-encapsulated way. Even if you know how it all plays out, that doesn’t make watching it any less fun. Watch it over a weekend and check it off your list of Need To Watch TV Shows.

Also, Fuck George Schultz.
