Full disclosure: I have never tried a lip oil before this, nor did I know what a lip oil was. I’d heard it before as a makeup product but I had no idea what exactly it was or how it differed from a lip balm. But since ColourPop came out with some and I knew I was already going to buy the So Juicy Plumping Gloss Balm With Peptides, I figure it’d be something extra to throw in my cart to see if this kind of lip product was right for me.

What is a Lip Oil?

So don’t quote me on this, but my understanding is this: a lip oil is meant to be a hydrating gloss. So you have the shininess of a gloss, with a slight tint of color, but the body of the product is a hydrating oil that works like a balm. I really gravitated toward this prospect of having a balm (my lips can get very dry often) that had a little oompfh and helped to make my lips feel smooth. If that sounds like something you could get down with, then I’d say to try out any kind of lip oil. For me, my experience with the ColourPop Lux Lip Oil was awesome.

Sheer Color With Amazing Hydration

When I swatched the Lux Lip Oil in the shade “Fresh Peach” in my initial Makeup Haul, I noticed quickly that it was very sheer. When applied to the lips it is again, very, very sheer. I could see a little change in color on my lips — when I put it on half my lips and then compared it to the other not-glossed half — but the pigment is very subtle and doesn’t come through very strongly. “Fresh Peach” is a very light peachy orange, as per the name, which makes it a good neutral color to start with; if you’re looking for more pigment, I’d choose a more bold shade, but this one was perfect for my initial test run.

Speaking of which — actually wearing this product felt very soft without being sticky. It felt very hydrating at first, which is a stark contrast to how some lipsticks and other products can feel. But what really surprised me was how my lips still felt nourished even after the oil wore off (like after eating, drinking, etc); I don’t have to continuously apply it to get that same effect.

In short: I LOVE this lip oil. I love it, I adore it, and I want to wear it all the time. Because it’s an oil it gives a little shine but again, there is no stickiness whatsoever. I love the way it visually looks on my lips and I love how it feels; it’s smooth like a balm but the fact that it’s an oil makes it even more comfortable to wear. The pigment of  “Fresh Peach,” since it is so lowkey, can easily be worn with literally any makeup and any outfit. I even wore this when I had no other makeup on, because it can just be swiped on the lips and won’t look strange or out of place. Thus is perfect for keeping in your purse or on your desk if you’re looking for a slight step above your typical chapstick.

Lux Lip Oil vs. Lux Gloss

Prior to trying out “Fresh Peach,” I’d previously bought a ColourPop Lux Gloss (which may or may not still be available to purchase, I can’t tell for sure). But since lip oil is billed as a sort of “gloss replacement,” I wanted to give my thoughts on how the two of these differ. Outside of pigment, the gloss is a lot thicker and stickier than the oil; both are very smooth on the lips, but I think it’s clear that one is meant more for looks while the other is meant more for lip care. The formulas are obviously very different from each other but I just wanted to say that the difference between the two is very clear. If given the choice, I would personally choose the Lux Lip Oil because of how it looks and how it feels.

My Beauty Review Verdict

Yes. Yes, yes, yes, 10/10 for the Lux Lip Oil. I would (and will) 100% repurchase this when I finish the tube I have. This peachy shade I would rebuy as a more everyday color, but I think I’d have to check out different shades for one that is more bold and shows up better on the lips. I know there are a million lip oils out there but let me tell you — I loved this one and I love it at the price it’s at. It is not unreasonable for me to repurchase this one and I will happily do so at an affordable price.

Compared to my review of the So Juicy Plumping Gloss Balm, this one I like for different reasons but would be way more likely to wear on a daily basis. I’ve been kicking around the idea of starting a Project Pan and I can tell you right now — if this was part of that I would have zero issue going through it. I’m honestly surprised at how much I’ve used it already. I absolutely love lip oil and this is my new favorite lip product ever.
